Chinese Learning – Words that go with hand ‘手’ in Chinese

This post presents both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. In terms of usage and meaning, both versions are the same. Have fun learning Chinese~

1. 揮手 挥手 /huī shǒu/: to wave

To wave at someone: “跟…揮手”/”跟…挥手”.

Ex: 他剛剛跟我揮手。/ 他刚刚跟我挥手。

tā gāng gāng gēn wǒ huī shǒu

He just waved at me.

2. 握手 /wò shǒu/: to shake hands

跟…握手: to shake hands with …

Idiom with 手:

握手言和 /wò shǒu yán hé/: agreeing, make peace

Ex: 他們倆個終於握手言和了。他们两个终于握手言和了。

tā men liǎng gè zhōng yú wò shǒu yán hé le

They finally make peace with one another.

3. 牽手 牵手 /qiān shǒu/: to hold hands

第一次约会，你会让对方牵手吗？:)

第一次約會，你會讓對方牽手嗎？:)

Dì yī cì yuē huì, nǐ huì ràng duì fāng qiān shǒu ma

Do you let your date hold your hand on the first date?

4. 舉手 举手 /jǔ shǒu/: to raise hand ‍

同学们有问题请举手喔。

同學們有問題請舉手喔。

tóng xué men yǒu wèn tí qǐng jǔ shǒu ō

Raise your hand if you have any questions.

5. 拍手 /pāi shǒu/: to clap

Tom很怕他表演完没有人要拍手。

Tom hěn pà tā biǎo yǎn wán méi rén yào pāi shǒu

Tom is so afraid that no one will applaud him after his performance.
